7/8/2010

Joint meeting with the CocoaHeads NYC Group.: http://cocoaheads.org/us/NewYorkNewYork/index.html

1) Dan Shockley presents on "Using POST Web Forms"

Many wonderful sources of information can be accessed by including search terms in the URL - i.e. using the GET method of web forms. Unfortunately, many other information sources require the POST method - often for good reason, as GET may be limited by length, ability to submit files, and resulting in very ugly URLs.

While submitting forms using POST is not as trivial as GET, it can be done, using command-line tools built into Mac OS X. By using AppleScript from within FileMaker (among other methods), you can harness the power of those tools and add significant capability to your solutions.

Dan says "For a VERY old introduction to this topic, see Dan Shockley's outdated page on POSTing web forms at:"

http://danshockley.com/formposting.php

For the latest and greatest, come to the meeting!

2) Andy Lee of CocoaHeads NYC will walk through the code for a simple Cocoa based shortcuts app using floating windows.

This presentation will dissect an actual elementary school data system, examine it's data structures (and input files) and review the clients expectations down to the number of clicks (reasonable/unreasonable)! This presentation will also examine the time investments of developing multiple cross-tabbed reports and discuss whether or not filemaker is right tool for the job?

Through close examination of our system, we hope to generate a lively discussion/brainstorming on the uses, best practices and possibly alternative schema for cross-tabbed reporting within FileMaker, a common request within K-12 schools and other organizations.

Bringing Your Databases Onto iPhones

Your database saves you daily, but now you need it handy all the time -- on an iPhone. Bento, FileMaker, FMTouch are there where you need them. Find out what you can do.

  • Three different levels of integration will be discussed. The new Bento app integrates simple single user databases seamlessly with your iPhone or iPod touch. FileMaker Server PHP Site Assistant helps you quickly create iPhone-friendly websites. FMTouch brings multiple related databases to these handheld devices. Differences will be explained, demonstrated, and discussed.
  • In addition to the New York FileMaker Pro Developers' Group, we've invited the Motion Pictures Collective, the New York Mac Meetup Group, and the iPhone Developers MeetUp to join this presentation by Agnes Riley, Mehboob Alam, and Chuck Edwards. Other interested attendees are welcome.

This JULY meeting will be held at the Apple SoHo Store (Prince and Greene Street), Friday, July 10th from 6:30 - 8:00pm.
